Greenhouse automation software for climate, irrigation and alerts

askcust develops greenhouse automation software: temperature, humidity, CO₂ and light from sensors, irrigation and fertigation, setpoints for controllers, alarm notifications and a log for every greenhouse. For greenhouse businesses where climate is set on each controller separately and failures are discovered in the morning.

What greenhouse automation is

Greenhouse automation is a system that collects climate, irrigation and nutrition readings from sensors, sends setpoints to ventilation, heating, supplementary lighting and irrigation controllers, and raises alerts about deviations and failures. The fast control loops run on the controllers inside the greenhouse, while the software brings greenhouses together, keeps a log and shows how climate and irrigation affected the crop.

Who needs a greenhouse management system

  • ·Greenhouse complexes with several compartments where each controller is set up separately and there is no overall picture.
  • ·Growers expanding from one greenhouse to several who want the same climate and irrigation rules everywhere.
  • ·Crop technologists who keep climate and irrigation logs in spreadsheets and compare seasons by hand.
  • ·Owners who need to know about a night-time failure right away, not from the morning round.

Which tasks greenhouse climate control solves

Climate setpoints are scattered across controllers

Temperature, humidity, CO₂ and supplementary lighting for each compartment are set from one system following a programme for the crop and stage, and controllers that accept external setpoints receive them automatically. Changes are logged with author and time.

Night-time failures are found on the morning round

Overheating, frost, a power cut, a stopped irrigation cycle or a lost connection to a controller trigger a notification to the person on duty by Telegram, push or SMS. Every event stays in the log with its time and response.

Irrigation and nutrition are managed by feel

Irrigation volume, EC and pH of the nutrient solution and of the drain are recorded for every irrigation cycle and compartment. The grower sees how much water and fertiliser the crop received and where it deviates from the feeding programme, not just the panel readings.

Seasons cannot be compared with each other

Climate, irrigation, treatments and yield are stored by compartment and date, so the next season is planned on the previous season's data. You can see which climate and irrigation gave a higher yield and where losses occurred.

Features of greenhouse software

Real-time control stays on the greenhouse controllers; the software sends setpoints, collects data and raises alerts.

Climate monitoring by compartment

Air and substrate temperature, humidity, vapour pressure deficit (VPD), CO₂, light and daily light integral for every compartment, with charts per day and season.

Climate setpoints and programmes

Programmes per crop and stage with day and night setpoints, passed to ventilation, heating, screen and lighting controllers that accept external setpoints.

Irrigation and fertigation

Irrigation schedules by time, light or substrate moisture, and records of volume, EC and pH of the solution and drain by compartment, with checks against the feeding programme.

Alerts and alarm scenarios

Thresholds and rules for each compartment, notifications to the person on duty, escalation if nobody responds, and an event log with the response for review after the shift.

Crop log and yield

Planting, treatments, observations and harvest by compartment, linked to the climate and irrigation of the same days for season analysis and planning the next one.

Several greenhouses in one system

Compartments, greenhouses and sites with the same rules, a consolidated dashboard for the owner and separate permissions for growers, operators and service contractors.

What the system integrates with

askcust connects existing controllers and sensors through their interfaces; supply, installation and set-up of equipment stay with manufacturers and integrators.

  • Modbus RTU / TCP
  • MQTT
  • climate controller APIs
  • temperature, humidity, CO₂ and light sensors
  • irrigation units and fertiliser dosers
  • water and energy meters
  • Telegram Bot API
  • SMS gateway

Equipment manufacturer's system or custom software

criterionManufacturer's systemSoftware by askcust
Climate controlThe manufacturer's strength: proven control algorithms for its own equipment.Control stays on the controllers; the software sends setpoints, collects data and raises alerts.
Mixed equipmentOther manufacturers' equipment connects only partly or through extra modules.Controllers and sensors from different manufacturers in one system via Modbus, MQTT or APIs.
Log and analyticsClimate charts are there; the crop and yield log is a separate product or spreadsheet.Climate, irrigation, treatments and yield in one database for comparing seasons.
NotificationsThresholds and channels are limited to what the manufacturer's system offers.Any thresholds and channels: Telegram, push, SMS, escalation to those responsible.
CostThe manufacturer's licences and modules, bought with the equipment or separately.A one-time development cost and support by agreement, with no licences per compartment.
When to chooseA large complex on one manufacturer's equipment that needs a proven climate computer.Mixed equipment, several small greenhouses, your own logs, reports and alerts.

How askcust works

  1. Greenhouse survey

A list of compartments, controllers, sensors and irrigation units, their interfaces and connectivity; how climate and irrigation are set today and which records the grower keeps.

  2. Architecture and alarm scenarios

What is controlled on the controllers, what the software sets, and how the system behaves in a power or connection loss are agreed and written down before development.

  3. Pilot on one compartment

Connecting the sensors and controllers of one compartment, testing alerts and setpoints on real equipment and collecting data for a first comparison with the previous season.

  4. Rollout to all greenhouses

Connecting the remaining compartments from the template, training growers and operators, and setting up the crop log and owner reports for the week and season.

  5. Support

Support in season, connecting new compartments and sensors, updating adapters when equipment is replaced, and new reports agreed with the growers.

questions and answers

Can our existing greenhouse controllers be connected?

Yes, if the controller has a digital interface: Modbus, MQTT or an API. askcust writes an adapter for each controller type, so equipment from different manufacturers works in one system. If a controller is closed and does not share data, separate sensors are installed next to it and its work is monitored through their readings; equipment suppliers select and install them.

What happens during a power cut?

Climate control runs on the controllers inside the greenhouse, so it does not depend on a server or the internet. The system records a power cut as an alarm and notifies the person on duty; for the notification to get through, power sensors, the gateway and the connection are put on an uninterruptible power supply. askcust includes backup power requirements in the design, and integrators supply the equipment.

Can a greenhouse be controlled from a phone?

Yes: climate, irrigation, alarms and the log are available on a phone, and only those with permission can change setpoints. Every change from a phone is logged with its author and time, and critical actions, such as switching off irrigation in a compartment, can require an extra confirmation. Alarm notifications arrive on the same phone.

Can several greenhouses be run in one system?

Yes. Greenhouses and compartments are kept in one database with the same climate and irrigation rules, and the owner sees a consolidated dashboard for all sites. Growers and operators get permissions only for their own compartments, and new greenhouses are connected from the same template without reworking the system.

How much does greenhouse automation cost?

The cost depends on the number of compartments and controllers, their interfaces and whether control is needed or monitoring and alerts are enough. askcust estimates a pilot on one compartment after surveying the equipment; extending it to all greenhouses is estimated separately. There are no licence fees per compartment or per user.
